ATTENTION DEFICIT SYNDROME

Did you know that between 8-10 per cent school-going children in India suffer from a common behavioural disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)? Not only does it affect a child’s success in school, it disturbs interpersonal relationships too. In fact, boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it though it is not yet understood why?

The symptoms of ADHD vary and are at times, difficult to recognise. Kids with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive and have trouble focussing. They may understand what’s expected of them but have trouble following through because they can’t sit still, pay attention or attend to details.

There are eight common signs that show a child suffers from ADHD.

1 A common ADHD sign is an inability to recognise other people’s needs and desires. Such a child would interrupt when others are talking, and also waiting for his/her turn while playing.

2 A child with ADHD has outbursts of anger and shows temper tantrums.

3 Such kids have difficulty sitting still. When forced to sit they keep fidgeting and squirming.

4 Such a child will show interest in a number of things, but will not stick to one thing to see it through. Often tasks are left midway.

5 A kid with ADHD has problem listening. He/ she will not pay attention to what you are saying.

6 There are many careless mistakes that a kid suffering from ADHD makes while doing something.

7 Such kids are generally loners and don’t participate in group activities.

8 Once you realise that your child has this problem, you must seek help from experts and not try to shove it under the bed thinking that it will be corrected on its own as the child ages.
