Curious to explore a historic Cathedral? But have no funds to visit it. No problem. Download the Art and Culture App launched recently by Google. Take a 360-degree tour of St. Paul’s with Google Street View, or pop your phone into Google Cardboard for a first-person experience.
Yes, Google has come up with a new Art and Culture App that puts the works of over 1,000 museums literally in the palm of your hand. It is not just an online gallery, but allows users to explore each of the listed museums, see its collection and beyond, borrowing the best of Google Photos, Streetview and 360-degree videos to bring history to life.
The search bar of the app is similar to the feature in Google Photos, that pulls out exhibits to match your query.
The app features daily news, themed lists and curated exhibits from partner museums, links to a new YouTube channel and even has an “Art Recognizer” mode that will identify paintings in select museums.
Agreed, it is no substitute to a museum, but for those who cannot reach a museum physically, it indeed is an incredibly easy way to experience the works of great artists and humanity’s artistic past.
