Smart screens as bad as TV screens
Children, if you are spending a lot of time on either your laptop, desktop, tablet, Ipad or even phone, stop doing so. For, if you don’t heed to this advice, chances are you will start putting on weight soon. And, I am sure, that’s not the change you would like to see.
Researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health have found that teens who use tv screen devices for five or more hours in a day are twice as likely to engage in behaviors that can lead to obesity. The behaviours include drinking sugary beverages while being glued to the smart screen and taking too little physical exercise. These behaviors result in a 43% increase in the risk of getting obese as compared with kids who don’t use smartphones, tablets or other such devices.
With childhood obesity on the rise, the responsibility also lies with the pediatricians who need to start advising families to set limits on the number of hours a child can watch TV or use the other screen devices. Further, the parents should encourage their teenagers to indulge more in physical activity, than playing board games or using play stations. In fact, it would be a better idea to fix play time just as you have done with them when they were small, at least an hour a day, during which each teenager should be sent out to the playground.
I know it won’t be an easy task to wean today’s tech-obsessed kids away from their gadgets, but believe me doing so is not only essential but also in the favour of children. It will surely yield good results in the long run in the form of improved general health of your child and his/her greater ability to fight off diseases.
