To score more marks, do all your learning by writing

Dear Children,

If you really want to score good marks, do your learning by writing. Don’t verbally learn or take notes on laptops or tablets, just write these.

A study done by Pam A Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel M. Oppenheimer of the University of California has shown that students who took notes by hand remembered more and had a deeper understanding of the material. The study was published in Psychological Science. So, just imagine if just taking the notes by hand aids in learning how much would it help if you learnt by writing?

Writing by pen and paper not only boosts memory and ability to understand concepts and facts, but also has various other benefits.

  1. Writing has a calming effect on brain which also retrains the brain.
  2. It coordinates the left brain and right brain, which means you use more of your brain. Needless to say, the more you use your brain the sharper it becomes.
  3. It boosts cognitive skills, more so in young children. Children learning how to write letters or shapesbenefit more when writing out by hand, instead of learning via technology.
  4. It inspires creativity. Taking pen to paper inspires more creative thought, because it is a slower process than just typing something on a keyboard or learning verbally.
  5. It sharpens aging minds. Writing by hand is a great tool to keep your mind sharp.
  6. It improves memory. A number of studies have shown that children who write by hand have better memory retention.
