Avani Lekhara Bio

Shooter Avani Lekhara became the first woman from the country to win a Paralympic gold medal. She won the medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing (SH1) event at the Tokyo Paralympics. Avani met with a car accident in 2012 and injured her spinal cord which led to her current condition.

She developed an interest in shooting after watching others at a nearby shooting range. She is a big fan of Abhinav Bindra and he is a source of inspiration for her. It is certainly because of him that India is witnessing a rising star like Lekhara at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

Avani began her professional shooting career in 2014. Soon, she won the Gold medal at the National Shooting Championship in 2015 and 2016. The 19-year-old broke into the headlines after she won a Silver medal at the IPC Para Shooting World Cup in Dubai in 2017. Interestingly, she again won a Silver medal at the Para Shooting World Cup 2021 held in Osijek, Croatia. She is currently ranked World No.5 in Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1.
