Dr. Virander Kumar Paul (IFS:1991 batch officer), presently High Commissioner of India to Kenya, has been concurrently accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Federal Republic of Somalia, with residence in Nairobi. Somalia, a country located in the Horn of Africa, has been engulfed in violence since the eruption of a civil war between clan-based armed groups in the early 1990s. The 1991 IFS Officer was currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry. The situation has been further complicated by Al-Shabaab terrorists, who are staging numerous attacks across the country in an attempt to impose a radical version of Sharia law in the country.
Commissioner to the U.K was one of the most outstanding, accomplished, and successful diplomats. His tenure was marked by immensely successful initiatives and memorable events including the regional P.B.D and Prime Minister Modl’s successful visit to Britain. His community empowering approach and involvement made him dearer and closer to all sections of the Indian community as well as the host community. In view of the impending Brexit implementation, he was an indispensable asset as India’s ambassador within the European Union. In that sense, his posting to Geneva was most appropriate.
